Sustainability

At St. Agnes Parish Council, sustainability is central to everything we do, including our website. We’ve worked with a local website design company that have designed and built this site using practices that reduce carbon emissions and share our commitment to a more sustainable future. This has been acheived through …

1. Low-Impact Design

Low-impact web design focuses on using fewer resources while maintaining a smooth, accessible user experience. This approach reduces energy use, speeds up load times, and supports a more sustainable internet.

We optimise all media by using appropriately sized images, compressing files, and choosing modern, efficient formats like WebP and AVIF. You won’t find background videos or autoplaying media here, both are avoided to reduce bandwidth and energy use.

Our clean, minimal layout helps you find what you need quickly, reducing scrolling, clicking, and cognitive effort. Clear navigation and concise content streamline your experience and reduce unnecessary data transfer.

To further lower our footprint, we’ve chosen simple colour schemes and avoided complex gradients or heavy visuals, which reduce energy demand on screens, especially OLED devices. We use system fonts and locally hosted icons to reduce third-party requests and improve performance.

This also helps decrease page size and loading times. We minimise the use of JavaScript and avoid animations. By using only essential scripts and lightweight code, the site performs well on all devices, including older or low-powered ones, while using less energy.

2. Optimised Performance

Fast-loading pages not only enhance user experience but also reduce energy use and emissions. Our responsive design ensures the site performs efficiently across all devices, particularly mobiles, where battery life and data use are more sensitive. We also make use of browser caching, allowing returning visitors to load the site more quickly without re-downloading content, another step toward lowering data consumption.

3. Eco-Friendly Hosting

Our website hosting provider supports our sustainability goals by operating on the Google Cloud Platform, which has been carbon neutral since 2020 and is powered entirely by renewable energy. The infrastructure also uses energy-efficient hardware and advanced cooling systems to further reduce its environmental impact.

Beyond infrastructure, our provider supports carbon offset programs, recycling initiatives, and water-saving efforts. They also partner with organisations such as the Green Web Foundation and One Tree Planted, aligning our digital presence with responsible environmental stewardship.

4. Sustainable Practices

Every aspect of this website, from the tools we use to the principles behind the design, reflects our commitment to minimising environmental impact. Low-impact design is about making thoughtful, efficient choices that prioritise both performance and sustainability.

This website is just one part of our broader pledge to reduce our carbon footprint and promote sustainable practices across Cornish councils. By visiting and using this new platform, you’re actively supporting those values and contributing to a greener future!
